In a world where data has become a type of currency. Our data is being gathered then auctioned off to the highest bidder.
Data is currency. In this techy age, our data is collected then sold for profit; oftentimes without our consent. This data is generated from our online interactions, every click carries data with it. Google for instance, tracks our key strokes (not just our search history). Some might say, “But Halia, I don’t have anything to hide.” While that may be true, we all deserve the fundamental right to privacy. Privacy allows us the freedoms of choice. Fear and surveillance, directly influence the choices we make and sometimes the options we have to choose from.
For example: Let’s say you have a bunch of medical appointments saved to your google calendar. What it that information was leaked to your health insurance provider and they decided to revoke your coverage? Total bullshit, right? This is our current reality, but don’t solely take my word for it. Here’s some digital privacy experts explaining the dangers of data theft and what we can do to protect ourselves.
